Inner stillness

Shiva Meditation

Meditate on Shiva as the great yogi: silent, awake, compassionate, and steady in the midst of change.

Practice

A simple Shiva meditation

This practice is gentle and devotional. It does not require strain, special posture, or forceful breath control. The aim is to return to steadiness with respect.

  1. Sit comfortably and let the breath become natural.
  2. Bring awareness to the center of the chest or the space between the brows.
  3. Repeat Om Namah Shivaya mentally with the breath.
  4. When thoughts arise, notice them and return to the mantra.
  5. Rest in silence for a few moments before ending.

Three Meditative Images

Devotees often meditate through image, mantra, and meaning. These reflections can be used separately or together.

Yogi

Shiva in silence

Reflect on the mountain-like stillness of Shiva as the one who remains steady.

Nataraja

Shiva in motion

Reflect on the dance of change, where creation and dissolution are held in one rhythm.

Lingam

Shiva beyond form

Reflect on the presence that cannot be reduced to one image, name, or boundary.
